We are People of Color. We didn’t choose to be, but we love our cultures. Because of our skin, we have added struggles. In our safe spaces, we have every right to feel welcomed and not tokenized, harassed or ignored. We ask for you to listen to us when we speak about racism because we are being effected by it daily. This video is a compilation of things actually said to POC involved in activism and social justice. 

We want to be heard, listen to us.

Know what’s so funny about this? How the blue-eyed White folks know this is an exercise (as in not real life!) and can’t stand taking the shit people of color deal with for a couple of hours before they’re screaming and crying and storming off. They know it’s fake, and they still can’t deal!

Yet these are the people who are supposedly so much smarter than me, so much more reasonable than me, so much more civilized than me!

This was amazing!! I’m really glad she talked about Matthew Shepard too! I feel like it’s really stupid to fight racism, sexism, and homophobia separately. They’re all branches of the same tree: Hating/Demeaning  others who are different in order to make oneself feel superior. And if you want to kill a tree, you have to chop it down at the base, killing all the branches.

This woman needs an award.

Jane Elliot is a superb woman. Seriously. 

I thought this was awesome, though I was bothered when in part 2 this came up:

“Is it important to you that you’re male?”
“Yes.”
“Yes, why?”
“I feel strong, powerful.”
“Your gender is important to you.”
“Yes.”
“Do you want to be seen as a male?”
“Yes.”
“Yes! Has anybody ever said to you “when I see you I don’t see you as a male”?”
“No.” (I’ve heard that one for myself before, ugh.)
“Has anybody ever said to you “when I see you I don’t see you as black”?”
“Yes.”

I’m not trying to pick stuff apart, and maybe she did mention things that were edited out…but I feel she could have touched on sexism. However that wasn’t the focus so maybe it just was ignored. Or I’m seeing it in an odd way and it wasn’t a big deal?

I’m also tired with the oppression olympics (an after thought). This issue being more important than that issue, yadda yadda…they’re all issues. Blah.

Yeah I copped that too, thought she could have handled it better. Still, as you say, not trying to pick it apart.

fuuuuuckin hell, very effective. Scary though, I don’t blame that girl for crying.
